Free CCNA 200-301 Practice Test

Five real questions from ExSim-Max, the practice exam the CCNA community recommends by name. Answer each one, read the explanation — that's the part that teaches — and get your readiness score at the end. The full version has 500+ more where these came from.

Question 1 of 5 · Network fundamentals

A host has IP address 172.16.45.14/28. What is the network address of the subnet it belongs to?

A.  172.16.45.0
B.  172.16.45.14
C.  172.16.45.16
D.  172.16.45.8
Why: A /28 mask leaves 16 addresses per subnet (256 − 240 = 16), so subnets fall on multiples of 16: .0, .16, .32, .48… The host .14 falls inside the .0–.15 block, so the network address is 172.16.45.0. On the real exam you'll need this math in under a minute — that speed is what our timed mode trains.
Question 2 of 5 · Network fundamentals

Which protocol does a switch use to prevent Layer 2 loops?

A.  OSPF
B.  STP
C.  CDP
D.  ARP
Why: Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) blocks redundant switch paths so broadcast frames can't loop forever. OSPF is a Layer 3 routing protocol, CDP discovers neighbors, and ARP maps IPs to MAC addresses — classic distractors the real exam loves.
Question 3 of 5 · Network fundamentals

A user can reach hosts on the local subnet but nothing beyond it. Which setting is MOST likely misconfigured?

A.  DNS server
B.  Default gateway
C.  Subnet mask
D.  DHCP lease time
Why: Local traffic never touches the gateway, so local connectivity working while remote fails points at the default gateway. This is the scenario style of the IP-connectivity domain — 25% of the exam — where the question describes symptoms and you diagnose.
Question 4 of 5 · Network fundamentals

Which statement about a trunk port is true?

A.  It carries traffic for multiple VLANs
B.  It belongs to exactly one VLAN
C.  It cannot use 802.1Q tagging
D.  It only connects to end hosts
Why: A trunk carries multiple VLANs between switches, tagging frames with 802.1Q so the far side knows which VLAN each frame belongs to. Access ports are the ones tied to a single VLAN and end hosts.
Question 5 of 5 · Network fundamentals

What does the command ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.1 configure?

A.  A static route to network 10.0.0.0
B.  A default route via 10.1.1.1
C.  A blackhole route
D.  An OSPF advertisement
Why: All-zeros network and mask match every destination — a default route sending unmatched traffic to 10.1.1.1. Reading configs and predicting behavior is exactly how the real exam tests routing.
